A burrows-wheeler transform based method for DNA sequence comparison

Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT) is an extremely useful tool for textual lossless data compression. Recently, it has found many applications to bioinformatics. In this paper, BWT is introduced from the view of combinatorics, and then an equivalence relation on words is proposed which shows that the transformation captures some common features of equivalent words. Based on the rationale that to w...

A note on the Burrows-Wheeler transformation

We relate the Burrows-Wheeler transformation with a result in combinatorics on words known as the Gessel-Reutenauer transformation.

Improvements to the Burrows-Wheeler Compression Algorithm: After BWT Stages

The lossless Burrows-Wheeler Compression Algorithm has received considerable attention over recent years for both its simplicity and effectiveness. It is based on a permutation of the input sequence − the Burrows-Wheeler Transform − which groups symbols with a similar context close together. In the original version, this permutation was followed by a Move-To-Front transformation and a final ent...

Syllable-Based Burrows-Wheeler Transform

The Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT) is a compression method which reorders an input string into the form, which is preferable to another compression. Usually Move-To-Front transform and then Huffman coding is used to the permutated string. The original method [3] from 1994 was designed for an alphabet compression. In 2001, versions working with word and n-grams alphabet were presented. The newe...

Output distribution of the Burrows - Wheeler transform ' Karthik

The Burrows-Wheeler transform is a block-sorting algorithm which has been shown empirically to be useful in compressing text data. In this paper we study the output distribution of the transform for i.i.d. sources, tree sources and stationary ergodic sources. We can also give analytic bounds on the performance of some universal compression schemes which use the Burrows-Wheeler transform.
